    Capital coffee chain Cilantro has long prided itself on providing outlets for customers' self-expression. It started with the “Big Red Book," an aptly named hardcover notebook that shuffled across the tables of each of the coffee chain's branches. From poetry, to declarations of loyalty to one drink or another, to the most personal revelations (never cheat on a Cilantro regular — you're bound to be blacklisted), the book's pages are pored over by employees, who choose passages to decorate the walls of the next new location.

    A few months back, the café mavens took it a step further. Cilantro Central, subtitled “By the people to the people," is a small-but-colorful 70-page publication written in both Arabic and English and almost entirely by customers. “Our walls tell stories of your friendships, the Big Red Book is a scrapbook of your life and Cilantro Central is your newsletter," one issue declares.   • ( ) Vendors sought for PTO benefit event

    The Cooperstown Parent Teacher Organization will hold a PTO Marketplace in conjunction with its popular Holiday Breakfast and More on Saturday, Dec. 8, in the Cooperstown Middle/High School. The PTO Marketplace, which will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., will showcase items such as books, toys, jewelry, Webkinz, crafts and other gift items.

    An all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, with sausages, applesauce, juice and coffee, will be served in the cafeteria from 8 to 11 a.m. Other activities will include a visit from Santa, dreidel games, a silent auction with the theme "Come to the Table," a bake sale, a winter sports equipment and clothing swap and sale, face painting and massages. Photographer Anita Briggs will donate her services, taking photos with Santa or a winter background to benefit the PTO. More>>
